Primary Purpose
The primary purpose of the position is to write both short and long form articles for The Trusted Professional, a bimonthly newspaper, and NextGen magazine, a biannual magazine, along with daily blog posts for both publications. The role is responsible for interviewing, writing, research and editing.
Duties and Responsibilities

Keep abreast of topical issues that are relevant to members and the profession, including legislative and regulatory affairs.

Liaison with the various NYSSCPA departments to develop copy that is important to members.

Conduct phone interviews with NYSSCPA members and other external sources.

Ability to synthesize complex accounting issues and specializations and to also write about social events, award winners and periodic obituaries.

Daily blogging on the nysscpa.org website.

Write profiles of annual award winners.

Primary research skills required for in-depth reporting.

This position should have experience in writing in the “voice” of senior leaders.

A drive to learn about emerging markets such as, cannabis, sustainability, cryptocurrency, a commitment to report on critical issues that affect the profession like diversity, equity and inclusion and timely issues like mental health and work life balance.

Develop relationships with professionals and thought leaders in an effort to network and develop story ideas and quotes.

Assist with the maintenance of editorial and photographic files.

Carry out special editorial projects as required.

Meet deadlines and ensure turn-around times.

Provide staff support to one or more Society committees.

Attend NYSSCPA events as needed for story assignments and reporting.

Comfort with conducting on camera or podcast interviews a plus.
Knowledge and Skills

Requires a degree in journalism, communications or related field.

Excellent writing and editing skills. Writing samples must be submitted.

Familiarity with the AP Stylebook as an editing guide.

A minimum of two years’ experience in newspaper, newsletter publishing, magazines or related communications experience.

Basic knowledge of financial systems and accounting practices a plus

Ability to interact well with different types of people and to get the story.
Problem Solving/Decision Making:
The Content Producer needs good problem-solving and decision-making skills to address basic issues as it relates to the level of responsibilities for this position. However, this position should defer to the Editor of the Trusted Professional, if issues cannot readily be resolved.
Communications:
Strong communication skills are the prerequisite for this position. The staff writer must interact with staff, members, and other professionals to meet the bi-monthly production schedule and to write and solicit articles and other online content.

This is a grade 5 non-exempt position with a salary range of $48,900-$63,500, with a competitive 401(k).
