ALM’s Regulatory-Inhouse Desk is looking for a versatile Reporter, based in New York, who will find and write quickly on new state and federal financial regulatory rules, legislative proposals and enforcement actions, assessing how companies are responding to and trying to influence changes that affect core business and growth strategy.
This is an opportunity to join one of the most visible and fastest growing premier Business-to-Business media companies in the country!
ALM Media’s national Regulatory-Inhouse team is focused on emerging legal and regulatory issues that affect companies in an array of industries and areas, including automotive and financial technology, banking and finance, health care, labor and employment and consumer affairs. Our team reports on corporate legal departments, state and federal regulators and private attorneys who are shaping and responding to regulatory and compliance developments. Our reporters in New York, California, Washington, Georgia and Florida—working collaboratively—move quickly to identify and track trends that have wide-ranging interest and consequences. This team is committed to quality journalism and innovative thinking as we cover this area for a demanding and sophisticated business audience.
Responsibilities:
- ALM’s Regulatory-Inhouse Desk is looking for a versatile reporter, based in New York, who will find and write quickly on new state and federal financial regulatory rules, legislative proposals and enforcement actions, assessing how companies are responding to—and trying to influence—changes that affect core business and growth strategy.
- Our financial reporter will approach stories from various perspectives—from corporate legal and compliance departments and their outside lawyers to the regulators themselves.
- The successful reporter will be expected to track and write on regulatory proposals at the New York Department of Financial Services, the New York Attorney General’s Office, U.S Treasury Department, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
- A familiarity with New York agencies and the state legislature is beneficial but not required.
- The beat would require a mix of quick analysis and longer enterprise stories that reveal how companies and their outside counsel are engaging with regulations that affect, among other entities, banks, investment advisors, private equity funds and accounting firms. New York’s anticipated response to the anti-regulatory agenda of the Trump administration is expected to be an ongoing coverage theme.
- The successful candidate would develop sources at companies, law firms and agencies in order to spot emerging issues, industry trends and regulatory and legislative initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Must be able to write clearly, engagingly and authoritatively about complex subjects.
- Must have an appetite to write about business and the forces that shape it.
- Must be able to establish and nurture relationships with lawyers, judges and industry insiders.
- Must thrive in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to juggle a stream of daily stories on tight deadlines with features and analysis.
- Must be creative, curious and enthusiastic about using social platforms, video, interactive data, and other digital tools to enhance reporting and connect with readers.
- At least three years of experience in a daily news environment. Experience with legal or business journalism is preferred.
