New global value equity fund seeks extremely talented, intellectually curious journalist or former journalist for a research position. The role involves conducting qualitative research on industry dynamics, business drivers, and company management, with the guidance of the Portfolio Manager. This is a unique opportunity to play an important role at an entrepreneurial investment firm and to get significant responsibility. Compensation will be competitive with finance roles and may include participation in the growth of the business.
You must have 5+ (and preferably 10+) years of experience in financial or investigative business journalism at a well-respected publication, and excellent interview and communication skills. Previous experience conducting investment-related due diligence is a strong plus, but is not required.
Responsibilities & Qualification
You must be able to do the following:
· Understand the critical aspects of an investment thesis
· Work with the Portfolio Manager to design a research plan to confirm or disconfirm the thesis
· Brainstorm creatively on interesting lines of inquiry and/or questions to explore
· Independently identify and engage key players/contacts to conduct qualitative analysis
· Interview industry participants in a structured, prepared way
· Manage local subcontractors where needed to conduct diligence in international markets
· Accurately document and source all findings
· Organize all of your information and analysis, and succinctly communicate your findings to the team
· Debate the merits of an investment thesis with the PM and other team members with well-supported arguments and complete intellectual honesty
· Work collaboratively with the PM and other team members to achieve our shared goals
· Conduct your diligence in an ethical, high-integrity manner in accordance with our policies
Background
We are a NYC-based investment partnership focused on global value investing. Our approach is characterized by deep due diligence on business fundamentals, a highly concentrated portfolio, and a multi-year investment horizon. Think “private equity in public markets.” The PM/founder previously worked as a partner at a large global value fund with the backing of large endowments, foundations, and family offices, and has many years of experience investing in the U.S. and international markets.
