Responsible for detailing and executing MoMA’s content strategy for video and producing content to build and engage audiences. Oversees the production and distribution of high-quality video for exhibitions and the collection, and informal behind-the-scenes clips for social channels. Establishes and collaborates with a small commissioning board to determine editorial vision, audience development goals, and scope and rhythm of an annual program of video, working within budget. Works with curators, conservators, educators, and other staff to create compelling video content (both original content and content adapted from existing footage) for a range of audiences. Coordinates live-streaming of events, performances, and symposia, and oversees the selection, circulation, and reuse of short extracts. Coordinates with the Digital Planning and Innovation (DPI) group to evaluate new collaboration and distribution opportunities. Works with the marketing and social media team to determine the most effective social distribution strategies and acts as the editor of MoMA’s video channels, including YouTube. Communicates regularly with stakeholders and collaborators so that priorities and progress are widely understood. Works as part of an informal design network within MoMA, collaborating with peers from Audio Visual, Advertising and Graphic Design, Interpretation, and Exhibition Design and Production departments. Ensures that Associate Director, Digital Media; Senior Creative Director, Advertising and Graphics Design; and Director, Audio Visual are involved in creative direction and brand implementation. Works with Imaging and Visual Resources, General Counsel, and Archives to develop digital asset management procedures and systems. Actively researches user-generated content and new and popular formats, and enables creative reuse of assets by developing and maintaining standards, tools and templates, and fair-use guidance. Identifies new talent to build a roster of filmmakers, video production companies, and image producers to keep MoMA at the forefront of digital in museums. Establishes and manages an annual program of film fellows to produce informal short-form content for use on social media and e-mail channels. Reports to Associate Director, Digital Media.
Requirements: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in film or another creative discipline and three or more years experience producing a variety of short-form video content or equivalent. Proven editorial, creative, and technical flair in the production of short-form video, from scriptwriting/storyboarding to editing. Expert understanding of the competitive landscape, audience trends, social media, and other distribution channels. Excellent planning, project management, and communication skills, with proven experience in managing concurrent projects and ability to work proactively, collaboratively, and effectively under pressure with a wide variety of Museum staff and outside partners. Interest and knowledge of art preferred. While the person should have training and experience as a generalist filmmaker, this is a producer role and encompasses commissioning, production, distribution and reuse.
