Wall Street Journal Seeking News Assistant

The Wall Street Journal seeks two news assistants to join the Strategy department, which is an incubator for new technologies, audience growth, community and news innovation. The department includes the full range of journalistic talent that makes the Journal one of the leading news organizations in the world — writers, video journalists, graphics designers, editors, product managers, engineers, designers, data scientists, artificial intelligence experts and more — in a lively, collaborative project to discover new offerings of journalistic value.

This is an opportunity to be involved in a variety of projects that will develop multiple skill sets. The idea candidate has had some experience in reporting, writing and storytelling in one other medium (video, audio, graphics). Journalism school experience counts. The candidate should be organized and excited to jump in short-term on many different projects where help is needed. It will be a plus if the candidate has data visualization skills. The news assistants should be comfortable with basic data analysis.

Typical assignments will be within the New Formats Team, where new types of storytelling are being created; within the WSJ Innovation Department, where new journalism tools and features are being tried out and built; and with the head of newsroom strategy, who is involved in a range of projects across the Journal’s global newsroom.

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience reporting, writing, and/or producing visual content at a news publisher or in journalism school.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.

  • Excitement about the strength of The Wall Street Journal’s brand and legacy as well as the opportunities ahead for growth and change.
