About the position:

The Managing Editor of Financial Planning, a keystone brand covering wealth management, leads day-to-day editorial operations, as well as contributing original reporting and writing.

Core responsibilities: 

  • Assign story and other content ideas to staff members and actively coach them on reporting and writing, and ensure their work achieves its stated goals before publication (clear focus, excellent production values, bold headlines, appropriate sourcing, strong supporting assets);
  • Identify, assign stories to and manage freelancers as appropriate, including administrative requirements related to expenses/invoicing;
  • Manage and curate the content of Financial Planning’s daily email newsletters;
  • Report and write original stories;
  • Contribute to and participate in Financial Planning’s high-profile live events and conferences, both in-person and virtual.
  • Manage the production of the print magazine, which is published nine times a year;
  • In pursuit of the above, the Managing Editor, Financial Planning is expected to: 
  • Establish and maintain editorial standards of quality, objectivity, style and independence in our coverage that is distinctive, trustworthy, and actionable. 
  • Ensure that content for each of the brand’s touch-points (website, email newsletters, social media, print magazine, video, podcast, etc) is consistently produced on schedule, at a high level of quality, and in alignment with the company’s overall content standards.
  • Manage freelance and T&E expenses according to budget, coordinating with and reporting to the Editor-in-Chief on a regular basis. Plan industry coverage requiring travel, assign reporters for that travel, and approve plans in accord with budget.
  • Establish and maintain a public profile as a leading voice on wealth management in the press, on social media, and at industry events.
  • Actively collaborate with journalists and editors at other Arizent titles and publications.

Additional responsibilities: 

Journalists at Arizent are expected to contribute to and participate in all channels and platforms in which we engage our readers. Those activities include: 

  • Create social media posts on a daily basis.
  • Participate in digital media, including podcasts, web seminars, video interviews, and so on.
  • Participate in live and virtual events hosted by Arizent brands.
  • Represent Financial Planning in other media, industry events, and other public contexts; and 
  • Offer creative ideas for how Financial Planning can continue to expand its rapidly growing presence and leadership within the community it serves. 

Job Requirements

Preferred candidates for the Managing Editor role will offer: 

  • 8+ years of experience in journalism.
  • Experience in managing teams of reporters and contributors, both internal and external.
  • Experience in creating and shaping content for multiple channels, including print, digital, video, audio and live events.
  • Track record of delivering content on time and within budget.
  • Detail-oriented approach with excellent organization and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Experience and confidence participating in digital media and other public forums; excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
