Chief Executive Group has set the agenda for America’s CEOs since 1977 and is now seeking our fourth Editor-in-Chief in history to lead all editorial operations, including print, digital and live events. We’re experiencing dramatic growth (we’ve been named by Inc. 500 as one of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies), and seek an editorial leader who can help take the company into the future.
This is a high profile, unique opportunity to help influence the course of U.S. business, lead an iconic brand, build a high-performance, dynamic team and develop new, cutting edge media services in a successful, highly entrepreneurial environment.
A typical day might include interviewing a Fortune 100 CEO, planning new digital coverage, editing copy from contributors, coordinating with the business team on a new product being developed and giving a TV interview to provide expert commentary on CEO trends.
It is critical that the right candidate have a passion for writing and analysis that helps people do their jobs better, inspires them to make their businesses fair, meritocratic organizations, and moves our country toward broader prosperity, innovation and opportunity.
The Editor-in-Chief has responsibility for:

Ensuring that the tone and editorial direction for Chief Executive magazine, ChiefExecutive.net and our moderated events are consistent with Chief Executive Group’s goals of improving the effectiveness of CEOs and inspiring free-market capitalism that provides opportunity and fairness for all. Our copy needs to enlighten, amuse, intrigue and challenge.

Identifying critical ideas and issues that affect CEOs and setting the editorial agenda accordingly; this includes identifying emerging trends in management techniques and strategy, technology, talent development, legislation and global business trends that affect decision makers.

Building a hungry digital audience for ChiefExecutive.net, including online feature stories with unique coverage angles for broader current events. Utilizing metrics to drive targeted, relevant digital content, e.g. traffic measures by topic, click-through rates, pages per visit, time on site and other key metrics.

Developing and approving all story ideas and assignments for Chief Executive magazine, including setting and meeting editorial budgets, issue oversight, style consistency and internal collaboration with the sales team as appropriate.

Identifying key themes and developing detailed agendas for CEO meetings and conferences, and serving as a major presence on stage.

Acting as our brand ambassador and representing Chief Executive Group at CEG summits and other media events that include television/webcast, radio and print interviews.

In conjunction with the CEG leadership team, building on our CEO network and CEO relationships to recruit speakers for live events and webinars.

Driving increased reader satisfaction, subscriptions, and advertising placement by exploring new or enhanced avenues to bring greater value to our readership, including issue supplements, daily e-newsletters, and deeper penetration across specific industries.

Playing an integral role in supporting the success of Chief Executive Group events and programs, including helping to drive attendee and sponsor revenue and attendee satisfaction.

Leading and mentoring editorial staff, including hiring strong writers and editors and creating a learning culture among the editorial team that encourages curiosity, innovative thinking, and journalistic excellence.
Qualifications:
The Editor-in-Chief will be a strong strategic thinker and will also have a passion for flawless execution of the overall editorial and digital strategy for Chief Executive magazine and ChiefExecutive.net. The ideal candidate will act as a thought leader both internally and externally, and will exhibit a strong sense of teamwork, approachability, and integrity. The Editor-in-Chief will also be comfortable with communicating regularly with CEOs and other C-Suite executives. Additional qualifications for the Editor-in-Chief role include:

Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity within a media environment, including direct responsibility for leading editorial and digital strategy for a magazine, newspaper or television program

Interest in product development, including new and unique digital and social media strategies and tools

Relevant experience hiring, managing and leading an editorial team

Exceptional communication skills, in particular strong facilitation skills (e.g. for mediating panel discussions and conducting CEO interviews)
