The Manager of External Communications role is within the Corporate Communications framework of the company, supporting the Commercial Banking line of business of Capital One, a FORTUNE 500 company and one of FORTUNE’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”
The Manager will provide ongoing public relations support for several lines of business in Capital One’s Commercial Bank, which manages a $40 billion loan portfolio and serves more than 4,100 clients and 35,000 accounts through a relationship-based banking model. The position reports to the Senior Director, External Communications.
The Manager will have exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills, expertise in relationship-building, solid media relations experience, and have good project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
Responsibilities:
- Strengthen and leverage the Commercial Bank’s relationships with trade and regional news organizations, as well as key bloggers and other thought leaders;
- Work effectively in cross-functional teams to advance external communications strategy;
- Support interviews and other interactions with external media, providing counsel, messaging support and media training, as needed;
- Write and edit communications materials, including press releases, media alerts, thought leadership, social media content and other communications documents;
- Understand each applicable team’s operating environment and develop and execute communications initiatives to further Capital One Bank’s reputation as an industry leader;
- Coordinate with communications team supporting Capital One’s signature community programs and initiatives;
- Coordinate media outreach, leveraging key contacts and managing relationships to prioritize and qualify media opportunities in national and regional dailies, wires, business periodicals, broadcast media, online/social media outlets and industry trades;
- Assess risks, issues, and potential communications problems and provide proactive solutions;
- Serve as PR liaison with professional and vendor partners;
- Perform additional PR tasks related to Commercial Bank activities as directed.
Basic Qualifications (REQUIRED):
- Bachelor’s Degree; Communications, Journalism, English or Marketing/Public Relations preferred;
- Five years of media relations/external communications experience;
- Experience working in a collaborative environment;
- Proven track record for implementing successful strategies and providing external communications counsel to business leaders;
- Strong written/verbal communications skills (writing sample required).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working for a leading brand within financial services;
- Ability to present complex subject matter in a clear, compelling manner;
- Proven ability to work effectively with multiple constituents, including communications and marketing colleagues and senior management;
- Ability to manage rapidly changing priorities;
- Creative, integrative problem-solving and structured thinking;
- Proven ability to manage media interviews for senior executive officers, including television, radio, global print/broadcast media and all trade publications;
- Strong understanding of the public relations industry, and related knowledge of key trade publications and local and national outlets;
- Experience in online/social media outreach and campaigns;
- A strong business background, as well as excellent managerial skills;
- Solid issues management experience;
- Self-motivated with strong organizational skills, analytical talent and attention to detail;
- Excellent presentation skills;
- Ability to manage pressure, meet deadlines and monitor and evaluate results;
- Prior experience working with agencies and large partnerships;
- Proficiency with MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and media analysis tools.
