CDP-North America (CDP-NA) seeks a Communications Manager to further showcase our strong presence in North America, expand our media presence, and support our Development and other outreach efforts. CDP Global is a non-governmental organization whose mission is to ensure that environmental and natural resource-related information and insights increasingly become central to financial and business decision-making. CDP-NA is the second largest office in the global organization, which is based in London.
In North America, CDP has grown dramatically over the past three years and seeks a Communications Manager who can work both internally and externally to help expand our thought leadership profile to further our mission,
Primary responsibilities:
Communications strategy
- Supporting and continually improving CDP North America’s media and communications strategy and outreach in collaboration with Communications Lead and Development Director;
- Liaising closely with program heads and operational staff (e.g. insights, corporate disclosure, supply chain, cities, investor initiatives, etc). to ensure timely coordination on media messaging and internal and external outreach planning;
- Coordinating and improving links with CDP’s Global communications team, particularly on CDP’s award winning investor research output, to deliver strong US media coverage of CDP’s global work; and
- Coordinating and streamlining CDP’s program-related outreach to our corporate, investor and city stakeholders.
Media outreach
- Strengthening and expanding CDP’s media contacts in New York City, regionally and nationally, for the purpose of placing stories and/or ensuring CDP spokespersons are sought out for interviews, quotes, comments etc.
- Arranging media events or individual meetings for CDP North America’s President and other spokespersons
- Conducting proactive media outreach and cultivating a network of journalists and editors in major media outlets (broadcast, print, web and social media) to ensure widespread coverage of CDP programs, reports, events, public announcements, and other projects;
- Identifying and acting upon media opportunities to maximize coverage of CDP’s work with investors; and
- Managing incoming media inquiries and coordinating with internal CDP personnel to provide appropriate follow up and response.
Content development
- Reviewing CDP Disclosure responses for compelling case studies, themes, and potential results warranting highlighting to the media
- Drafting press releases, media advisories, Q&A, talking points, statements, as well as other communications documents;
- Creating and writing original content for marketing materials, publications, and newsletters working in tandem with CDP team leads
- Managing and driving CDP North America’s social media and online presence, including writing blogs and tweeting to engage target audiences
Required qualifications:
- A minimum of a 4 year college degree (preferably a BA in communications or related field) required, Masters a plus;
- Four to seven years of experience in journalism/communications/ public relations, including some experience with external media outreach
Preferred qualifications:
- Existing relationships with key media outlets and strong familiarity with sustainability and business/financial media preferred;
- Proficiency in effectively using social media to build visibility and promote engagement;
- Familiarity with the Cision integrated PR software and media contact database;
- Knowledge of corporate social responsibility, sustainability, ESG, and financial markets a plus; and
- Familiarity with InDesign or Publisher a plus.
Skill requirements:
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills;
- Track record of ability to keep pace with rapid evolution in issues and topical developments
- Demonstrated ability to research, assimilate and analyze information, compose documents, and present data in a clear and concise manner to appropriate personnel, including top management, program staff and external stakeholders;
- Ability to communicate and liaise confidently with a wide range of audiences and build and maintain relationships (corporations, investors and partner organizations);
- Self-starter with aptitude to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment; and
- Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines and targets.
Compensation and benefits:
CDP offers a competitive NGO salary commensurate with experience and skills, a potential for annual bonus, 24 days of vacation, health and dental insurance, and a non-contributory pension provision after 3 months employment.
