The Hedge Fund Law Report Seeking Associate Editor

The Hedge Fund Law Report (HFLR) is, by common consensus, the leading information resource focused on the legal, regulatory, compliance and operational aspects of the hedge fund industry. Since 2008, the HFLR has been tackling legal questions with business consequences via “expertise-based journalism” – a combination of trenchant reporting and proprietary legal expertise. We identify the most effective ways of handling the hardest questions facing the hedge fund industry, and we describe such “best practices” for our subscribers in articles that are rigorously structured, deeply researched and crystal clear. Subscribers – key decision-makers at hedge fund managers, prime brokers, institutional investors and law and accounting firms – rely on the HFLR to identify issues, mitigate regulatory risk and perform their day-to-day jobs more effectively.

The HFLR was acquired in July 2014 by the Mergermarket Group, a transaction that has given us the resources to deepen our editorial bench, enhance our technology, develop our product and expand geographically. We are looking for an Associate Editor to help drive this growth – to help take the HFLR from great to even greater. This is a visible role not only within our company, but also in the broader hedge fund industry, which looks to the HFLR as a barometer of best practices. The role calls for a uniquely outstanding individual – a star performer – and the remuneration is commensurate with the stature of the role.

Following is a fuller description of the Associate Editor role and characteristics likely to yield success in it.

Description of the Role

  • Drafting of thematic articles – articles analyzing hard legal questions with business consequences – and other types of articles based on extensive interviews of and other interaction with industry experts (law and accounting firm partners; manager GCs, CCOs, COOs, CFOs and others; prime broker and administrator executives; institutional investor decision-makers; and so on).
  • Proactive networking with key hedge fund industry participants with the goals of understanding the “pain points” of manager GCs, CCOs, COOs, CFOs; cultivating sources for articles; developing a pipeline of contributed articles; gathering industry intelligence; and exploring event and other collaboration opportunities.
  • Identification of topics for coverage in thematic articles and structuring of thematic articles.
  • Editing and copyediting of articles created by internal staff or contributed by third parties.
  • Regular attendance at, participation in and coverage of leading hedge fund industry events.
  • Participation in events produced or sponsored by the HFLR, including occasional travel.
  • Assistance in maintaining existing and forthcoming HFLR databases.
  • Continuous product and service innovation, in particular, applying technology to increase the value delivered to subscribers while remaining true to the core mandate.
  • Continuously soliciting editorial and product feedback from subscribers and others and integrating such feedback into innovation efforts.
  • Interaction with technology, sales, marketing and other business functions.

Characteristics Likely to Yield Success in the Associate Editor Role

  • A first-class, inquisitive intellect and a voracious curiosity.
  • A total command of the subject matter, namely, hedge fund law, regulation, compliance, operations, marketing and related functions. Also, ideally, a thorough command of adjacent substantive areas such as private equity and derivatives regulation. Evidence of such domain expertise would be standout performance as a mid-level associate at a top law firm hedge fund practice or as an associate general counsel at a noteworthy hedge fund manager.
  • Outstanding writing ability, which in this case means the ability to structure complex discussions in a logical way and convey complicated concepts clearly.
  • Ability to see immediately to the core of complex legal and business issues and to make lucid sense out of a significant volume of unstructured data, anecdote and information.
  • Ideally, a pre-existing network of close relationships among top decision-makers in the hedge fund legal, compliance and operational communities. Regardless of the depth of that pre-existing network, an ability to cultivate long-term, productive relationships with key industry decision-makers – that is, a passion for networking.
  • A relentless internal motivation; an inner drive that is not fueled by praise or criticism, but rather by a personal desire to be the best in the world at what you do. The role involves minimal day-to-day oversight, significant discretion and significant accountability for results.
  • Facility and comfort with technology.
  • Capacity for occasional domestic and international travel.
  • Law degree from a top law school.
